Toledo Symphony Orchestra Young People's Concerts

November 11, 2010 – 9:45 and 11:00
Take Me Out to the Orchestra
The orchestra is a team, and each instrument and musician plays an important role in creating a winning performance. Learn about each team member through performances of selections from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Copland's Rodeo. There’s no better way to show your students all of the parts of the symphony orchestra!

February 17, 2011 – 9:45 and 11:00
Science of Sound
In partnership with Imagination Station, we explore the instrument families and musical concepts like pitch and volume by uncovering the science behind them. Join us in a scientific experiment to dissect the orchestra through selections from Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite and Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite.

Tickets are still only $4 per student, and chaperones get in free. Registration details at the Toledo Symphony Orchestra site.

The Stargazer is narrated by Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek’s Lt. Uhura. In this program, she shows us how we can "visit" the stars with telescopes and our minds. "

Note: Pair planetarium trips with the wonderful space science books of Gail Gibbons and Seymour Simon.

PLAY Exhibit at The Henry Ford

The PLAY Exhibit is at The Henry Ford until September 19, 2010.

From the site: "PLAY, an innovative family-oriented exhibit now open in Henry Ford Museum’s Exhibit Gallery, offers visitors an engaging new way to play. You’ll think you’ve arrived in a giant’s playground! PLAY employs larger-than-life, all-body interactive versions of favorite games like bowling, billiards, dice, backgammon, foosball and dominoes."

Note: Have you visited The Henry Ford lately? We bought a family membership one year and visited many times, which was much more economical than going once per year. There are easily at least 4-6 field trips within the museum and village, in addition to a few extra exhibits a year like this one. Consider reading The Story of Inventions when you visit the transportation exhibits in the museum.
